Reflection Question #3

Take a look at three of these teacher blogs. Discuss in a group of three or four how teachers are using these blogs to provide teacher, peer, and parent feedback. Then post your thoughts on how you might use this in your classroom.

It would be a good way to communicate, teacher to student, student to student, and/or teacher to parents. Assignments could be shared even though students may be physically absent from class. Therefore, they could keep up with what the rest of the class is doing.

This is a great tool to allow for teachers to post weekly assignments and students can open this and show their parents what they are doing in their classes. Parents could respond by asking the teacher questions about what they are seeing. Students could also ask questions of the teacher. Good ideas.

Blogging is a great way for students to respond to cues and questions. Kids who may be hesitant about speaking aloud in class may be less hesitant responding in this way. It also allows several discussions to take place simultaneously with the instructor being able to monitor and comment as well.

Teachers have used these blogs in a wide variety of ways. The blogs then can be used to continue conversations that were held in class, can allow parents to access what was being done in class, and can allow you to add additional information if things that are being discussed in class appear in the news.
This would be a great tool for all of these reasons. I would especially like to be able to continue things that were being done in class and to share with parents.

This is allowing kids & teacher(s) to share thoughts & information quickly and openly. How could you possibly do so much in a conventional classroom-discussion format? Much higher participation rates, too (kids afraid to speak up in live class format).
This would be great for groups debriefing the results of science labs!

Blogs help students to stay abreast of current topics and issues in the classroom. The assignments posted encouraged higher order thinking. Students who are absent from school can still keep up with assignments by accessing the teacher site. Student engagement will increase. Parents are aware of assignments and course progress. A negative can be spelling and use of grammer which can be examined by all in a site not protected.

I technically don't have a "classroom" since I am the librarian at my school, but the possibilities are endless. The way I see myself using this is for students to request and get book recommendations or to be in book clubs with students in other classes or even in other schools/states/countries! I also liked that some of the blogs posted calendars, student work, and cool websites to look at. I could use all of those in the library.

Building a classroom page would be a great opportunity for students, integrating 21st Century tech skills into the curriculum. By allowing students to build the page themselves, with scaffolding from the teacher, they will have ownership in the page, learn valuable tech skills, while also saving the teacher time (the teacher may even learn some things from the students!). In my classroom, I would use a blog to post literature discussions...kind of like a book club.

Several blogs were well designed. However, others were lacking in detail. Blogs are a useful tool for peer-peer reflections. It is a Great resource. Would create high student interest.

Several of these seemed to be used more as a on-direction line of communication. For good 2-way communication, educators need to provide a reason for students/parents to respond.

Blogs allow students to express their concerns in a less confrontational way.

Student blogging is powerful. They can put a voice to their writing and write for a purpose that makes sense to them. One caution--I have seen teachers go a bit overboard with blogs and not ever student is a writer, just like not ever student is a photographer. Not every student needs to share their inner thoughts and feelings openly with a blog for a grade. Blogging for educational purposes should be focused on content.

I could have my studens make predictions, discuss what they think about their reading, etc. That way I can see what all the kids (even the quiet ones) are thinking about the reading.

Blogging is a great way to improve student writing because they are writing to an authentic audience. It does need to be moderated by the teacher though before being posted.

Blogging! What an amazing way to give and receive feedback and it can be done at any level. AP Calc and First Grade in this example is a very wide range. In a sense, it is a tool that can be used with all learners regardless of condition.

there are many many ways to use blogs in the classroom. some of them are: responses to given literature works, submissions of student writings, and question and answers for a math blog on topics or procedures that are difficult to understand. students could help each other on ways they do problems that make sense to them and may be a better way for their fellow students.

This is a great tool. This advances the idea of a truly 21st century classroom. All classrooms need computers for students and teachers to use.

Great way to keep both parents & students connected. The thing here is not making technology the primary focus...because students don't. They just use what's natural to them. This page provides the proper information which allows everyone to stay on the same page. Parents can also communicate with the teacher, which can show a healthy relationship in the presence of the student as they view the exchange.
