I use informal about once or twice a week in any subject area and formal groups for specific content about once a month. I find formal groups best used in social studies and science in the elementary classroom.

the groups vary in terms of purpose, structure and duration. For informal, "just in time" checking for understanding, practice. For sustained projects with groups of students who come to know each other, base groups. Formal roles and structure webquest. oops! time up!

They differ in the way you put your groups together and what content or topic you will be using with students. Any activity where the teacher wants ...time up!
